Kye Yeung’s customers love their cars — and they drive fancy ones. When their car needs a repair, they want it done right, and they want it back fast. At European Motor Car Works, having dependable, high-performance equipment is a necessity. In Yeung’s latest shop expansion, Global Finishing Solutions (GFS) and Maximum Equipment & Technical Services delivered what he needed to get customers back on the road and keep OEMs happy.
Please tell us your story and introduce your business.
“I’ve envisioned and built the shop of my dreams, and I come to work every day still amazed that I pulled it off. We’re a high-end, niche shop, located in Costa Mesa, California. We may repair only 20 cars a week, but most repair orders are around $17,000. Our longest-tenured employee has been with us for 42 years. Our average employee has been with us for 20 years. We’re able to offer them a higher salary because our average repair order is higher. OEMs have stayed with us all these years and allowed us to prosper, and we have been able to promote their brands and help with their customer retention. Our goal is to make a car just like it was before an accident, so that the consumer doesn’t hold it against the brand. That’s the most successful thing any shop can do.”
What do you like most about your GFS equipment?
“We do a lot of matte finishes, which are the most difficult finishes to do. When those matte finishes come out of our Ultra XP1 Paint Booth, I cannot believe how clean they are. We really clean the cars in our prep work, but we couldn’t do it without the paint booth. With our previous booth, there would always be at least one speck of dirt in the paint job that would ruin the whole finish. I’m still in awe of how consistent the airflow is in the booth and how clean the cars come out of it.”
How has your GFS equipment benefited your business?
“We have deadlines to meet. Our customer is going to cancel the order if the car is not done by a certain date, and you don’t get a second chance. We need to assemble it and paint it, and it needs to go like clockwork. Very rarely is there a contamination issue with our GFS booths. Our preppers, painters and equipment all have to work in conjunction to produce these flawless finishes.”
What is the plan for the future of your business?
“We want to continue to grow as much as we can. My exit plan has always evolved around my two daughters, Nichole Hubbard and Jennifer Yeung. Nichole and Jennifer, along with my son-in-law, Mike Hubbard, and my grandson, Connor Kelly, make a formidable team. I am confident they will continue our goodwill and success into the future.”
