Air Make-Up Unit Fuels Growth for Wisconsin Body Shop

WithĀ 10Ā cars lined upĀ waiting to be painted, Jordan Yule knew his Wisconsin body shopĀ was not operating at peak efficiency. Repairs were taking longer than he liked,Ā which meantĀ money was being left on the table.

Rather than invest in a secondĀ paint booth, which would have required anotherĀ shopĀ expansion, YuleĀ opted to addĀ an Air Make-Up Unit (AMU) to heat hisĀ Performer ES Paint BoothĀ from Global Finishing Solutions (GFS). The addition of an AMU hasĀ openedĀ the door to new profit opportunities.Ā

ā€œWith the AMU, weĀ have theĀ capabilityĀ to do more. We can get through twoĀ orĀ three more cars a day now,ā€ said Yule, owner ofĀ JY Collision CenterĀ in Fall Creek, Wisconsin.

In 2019,Ā Yule completed aĀ 3,200-square-foot expansion ofĀ JY CollisionĀ that included the installation of theĀ Performer ES Paint Booth, as well asĀ anĀ Aluminum Repair StationĀ from GFS. It was a significant step forward forĀ JY Collision, which was founded in 2016Ā ā€”Ā with YuleĀ performingĀ repair work at his houseĀ ā€”Ā and moved to a permanent location in 2017.Ā

Still, even with six technicians and Yule painting as well,Ā JY CollisionĀ hit a ceiling at about 35 repair jobs a month.Ā For his business to grow the way he wanted, he needed to cut down on the backlogs and get cars back in the hands of customers faster.Ā

Adding an AMUĀ in 2020Ā wasĀ a financial investment forĀ JY CollisionĀ andĀ resulted inĀ the shop being shut down forĀ three days for installation and electrical work.Ā Doing the math on the ROIĀ ā€”Ā and considering theĀ immediate and long-term needs of his shopĀ ā€”Ā it was an easy decision for Yule.Ā

ā€œWe were pullingĀ inĀ shop air, so it was making the shop cold, and the paint jobs were dirtier,ā€ Yule said. ā€œNow that we have pressurized theĀ paintĀ booth,Ā we areĀ pullingĀ inĀ outside air and heating the boothĀ with the AMU. The paint jobs are a lot cleaner,Ā and weĀ canĀ get a lot more cars through.ā€

WithinĀ the next five years, Yule wants toĀ add aĀ second expansionĀ toĀ give his shop three or four more work bays and one or two more prep decks.Ā For now, Yule is focused on trying to capitalize onĀ the increased throughput made possible by his new AMU.Ā

Yuleā€™s advice to body shop owners debating the addition of an AMU: ā€œIf you have the money up front to do it, I would definitely do it up front.Ā If youĀ areĀ getting your feet wetĀ with your businessĀ and want to see where life is going to take you, I would wait. I feel I did it the smart way for my business by waiting. But Iā€™m really glad I have the AMU now.ā€
