Chaney Auto Works
📍 Franklin, Kentucky
Scott Chaney wanted to make his shop’s superior paint jobs even better. He turned to Global Finishing Solutions.
Please introduce your business and tell us your story: In 1989, I graduated high school and started classes at Bowling Green Technical College for Refinish Technology. I worked at an independent repair shop in 1990 and moved to a Chevrolet dealership in 1991. Then, on the Monday before Thanksgiving in 1999, my wife, Carol, and I opened Chaney Auto Works in Franklin, Kentucky. Now I’m a paint body guy that happens to be a business owner.
Since its conception we’ve increased our customer base and operations, and in 2013, I was fortunate enough to win the PPG ASE Master Refinish Technician of the Year Award — they flew me and my family to California for the banquet. I am married to my high school sweetheart of 26 years, and we have two daughters: 19 and 14. I wouldn’t be anywhere without my family.
What services do you offer and how many jobs do you usually perform? We are a collision repair center, focusing about 90 percent on insurance work. We typically work with all major insurance companies. Our facility averages about 50 jobs per month with one painter, two body technicians and one helper that floats between body and paint.
Why did you decide to purchase new equipment? We expanded. We had two paint booths, but one was in a separate area, not conveniently located within the building. One booth had been here since we opened 1999 and the other was a used booth that we purchased in 2006. We upgraded every single piece of equipment in the shop except the paint booths. In order for us to stay competitive and produce the best quality work, we knew it was time for an upgrade.
How did you decide on GFS equipment? We went to about five or six shops in the state to look at their paint booths. We talked to the owners, managers and painters about what they liked and disliked about their booths and equipment. Ultimately, we got the best feedback about GFS booths in how they perform, the quality they produce (especially with waterborne blower and dryers) and the service GFS provides.
“It was like night and day looking at the different companies. Everyone who had a GFS paint booth had nothing but good things to say.”
What GFS equipment did you purchase and how has it benefited your business? We have two Ultra® XP1 Paint Booths and one Paint Mix Room. We started using them the second week of October 2017, and they have hands down produced better paint jobs, increased efficiency and made us an overall better shop.
“Upgrading our paint booths alone has increased our productivity by 35 percent.”
What is your plan for the future of your business? We plan to make our shop even more efficient — getting cars to flow through the shop with no stalls or dead spots in our workflow. We already have all of the best equipment with the best technicians in the area. Our business wouldn’t be where it is today without them, and they wouldn’t be able to produce the product they do without the equipment.
A big thank you to GFS’ distributor, Mike Puthoff from Midwest Spray Booths for providing the photos!
