“Marton’s Auto Body is a family-run business. My parents started it in 1984. For 20 years, my dad worked at a Ford dealership as a collision tech. He did some work on the side and saved up a bunch of money, then decided to go on his own and built this shop. My mom and dad have since passed, and the shop is now owned by me and my wife. We finished a renovation in 2020 that included the addition of a 2,400-square-foot paint and glass shop.”
“We are a basic collision repair shop. I’m still actively involved with everything, from cleaning the floors to painting to body work. We’re a small business, and in small towns in Saskatchewan, we all do as much as we can on our own to save money. Kipling is a town of about 1,100 people, and we have a surrounding area of about 2,000 people, which we service. People from other towns come to Kipling for shopping and school, and there are a lot of people driving back and forth every day, so that really helps our business.”
“When investing in new finishing equipment, we wanted a manufacturer with local support. We had a good relationship with our GFS distributor, Dormer Finishing Systems, which is located in Winnipeg. GFS equipment was an easy pick. In talking to people in the industry, they said GFS has been around forever and their equipment is well-trusted and reliable. The availability of people to service our equipment played a big part, as Winnipeg is only four hours from Kipling.”
“Our GFS equipment has been flawless. Prior to our new GFS booth, we had an old crossdraft booth. We were at the mercy of the outside air. I would mask in the morning, put on sealer and basecoat by 3 p.m., add clearcoat by 5 p.m., then go for supper and come back to the shop to shut the fans off. It was an all-day procedure to do a medium-sized paint job. Now, with our new GFS booth, it takes just 2 ½ hours to do the same job. I now don’t have to plan my day around the weather. The quality is also way better with the new paint booth. The lighting system is so good, I can see exactly what I’m painting.”
“We are 80 percent of where we want to be in terms of the long-term vision for our shop. I want to keep upgrading the other equipment in my shop and keep moving forward. This GFS paint booth is good until I retire, I’m pretty sure. The challenges with our equipment are now gone, so we can get down to work and get painting.”
