Cross Draft Paint Booths

GFS Cross Draft Paint Booths

The most cost-effective airflow style, cross draft paint booths offer reliable performance at an affordable price point. Since there is no pit to dig, cross draft booths are also easier to integrate into existing facilities. Air flows horizontally through a cross draft booth, starting at the front of the booth and flowing over the product or part and into a filter bank in the booth rear.

Cross Draft Paint Booth FAQs

Air enters cross draft paint booths from the front and exhausts at the rear, flowing horizontally over the product. Filters on each side remove contaminants from incoming air and overspray from outgoing air. Cross draft airflow is among the most widespread configurations because it’s easy to use and install. Cross draft paint booths are also versatile, providing a good environment for tasks like sanding and prep work.

Cross draft paint booths offer the most economical airflow configuration. They don’t require concrete exhaust pits or structural modifications, dramatically reducing upfront costs. Likewise, cross draft paint booths require less floor space than other configurations and offer easy installation.

The relatively simple design of cross draft paint booths allows painters to make full use of the equipment right away. And since cross draft paint booths are fully enclosed, they support higher-quality finishes than open face booths.

The horizontal airflow of a cross draft paint booth is the reason for its accessibility, but also presents limitations. There is a higher chance of overspray landing on freshly painted surfaces, especially large, flat surfaces such as car hoods and industrial panels. Skilled painters can compensate for this, however, any errors could result in costly rework or subpar finish quality.

Similarly, painters may inadvertently obstruct the horizontal airflow in cross draft paint booths by standing in its way. This effectively limits where painters can stand as they work. Cross draft paint booths also struggle in high-volume environments since contaminants can be removed only through manual cleaning. Generally, a cross draft paint booth won’t deliver the high-end finish of a downdraft configuration.

Maintenance is essential for every paint booth, but cross draft configurations must be sanitized regularly to avoid cross-contamination. The horizontal airflow doesn’t eliminate all of the overspray, dust, dirt and other contaminants from the working environment, making it easier for them to affect the finish quality.

It’s best to divide maintenance tasks into daily, weekly and monthly responsibilities. Your team should sweep the booth with non-sparking brooms every day to eliminate debris from the floor and walls. You should also use a tack rag to wipe down surfaces, such as the air hose, to remove loose particles before painting.

Your booth’s walls and floors should be cleaned weekly. Use a non-sparking scraper to remove overspray buildup on the walls, while a solvent-based cleaner is the best option for the floors. You should also clean your booth’s lighting fixtures every week to maintain proper visibility.

Monthly maintenance tasks include checking filters for visible debris buildup, the ventilation system for frayed wiring or other signs of wear, and the seals and doors for a proper seal. It’s a lot to consider, but expert help is available.

GFS offers a flexible service and preventative maintenance program to help our customers maintain their equipment.
