Pleated cardboard is an accordion-style, collapsible paper filter with round holes that traps overspray and reduces filter replacement cost. Overspray-laden air is drawn into the filter by the booth’s fan and makes several radical directional changes as it’s forced through the trapping chambers of the filter. Kinetic energy generated by each change in air direction causes individual paint particles to be deposited on the surfaces within the filter.

Code Compliance

GFS products are designed and manufactured to meet the applicable requirements of various industry-recognized codes and standards.

  • Reference NFPA 33 and Chapter 24 of the International Fire Code (IFC) for spray applications using flammable and combustible materials
  • Reference NFPA 86 and Chapter 30 of the IFC for curing and drying applications
  • Many components and product lines are ETL and ETL-C listed. The ETL or ETL-C mark is proof of compliance with North American safety standards, including UL, NFPA, OSHA and more
  • A UL or CUL listing verifies that Underwriters Laboratories has tested GFS’ product and determined that it meets their stringent safety and performance requirements

Please be aware that local requirements may vary from national codes. GFS recommends consulting with your local authority before purchasing paint booths or other finishing equipment.

GFS engineers regularly contribute to the advancement of codes and standards that affect the industries that we work in. Several of our engineers serve on various NFPA Technical Committees responsible for key finishing industry standards.

Paint Booth Filters FAQs

GFS offers an extensive selection of paint booth filters designed to maximize performance while maintaining regulatory compliance, including multi-stage filtration systems and HEPA-certified models. Some examples include:

GFS Wave Filters

GFS Wave filters have a ā€œwaveā€ design that increases their surface area to improve depth loading and holding capacity. They minimize paint run-off, reducing the need to clean the booth floor and allowing for fast filter changes.

Exhaust Filters

Exhaust filters capture air and remove overspray and volatile compounds before returning it to the booth environment. You can choose from multiple options, including high-performance filter media, panel filters, fiberglass filters and gold polyester filters.

Intake Filters

Intake filters pull air into the booth from outside, eliminating airborne debris before it settles on wet paint. Available models include intake pads, tacky roll media and high-temperature roll media

Air Make-Up Unit (AMU) Filters

AMU filters clean the air entering the unit, ensuring a consistent, economical source of replacement air.

Paper Filters

Paper filters are designed to eliminate overspray and dust from the booth environment. They come in multiple configurations, including pleated cardboard, paper mesh with a polyester backing and paper mesh without backing.

This is not an exhaustive list of the filters GFS provides. Please contact us to learn more about the filters we offer and which would be best for your shop.

Dirty, overloaded filters compromise booth performance. Overspray that isn’t removed introduces tiny particles that can affect paint jobs, making the finish look sloppy. Dirty filters also may be flammable, leading to unsafe working conditions. Your shop may even run afoul of regulatory codes if your paint booth filters cannot effectively clean the air in your workspace.Ā

In extreme circumstances, clogged filters could take your booth offline, leading to unexpected downtime and lost revenue. Regular filter changes help ensure your shop remains as productive as possible.

The timing of filter changes depends on three major variables: process, environment and equipment.

Process

Filter shelf life is determined by operational hours when air flows through the system, not time since installation or the last filter change. A busier shop will need more frequent filter changes.

Environment

Intake filters draw outside air in, so the quality of that air impacts filter performance. If your shop is located somewhere with a high pollen count or excessive dust, your filters work harder and won’t last as long.

Equipment

Filters have variable life expectancies based on how they function and the quality of materials used to manufacture them. Fortunately, replacement schedules usually remain consistent.

Generally, intake filters last longer than exhaust filters. GFS offers manometers to track exhaust filter performance, letting you know when it’s time for a change. Our comprehensive maintenance program can also ensure you never miss a needed filter change.

Global Finishing Solutions has more than 50 years of experience serving multiple industries, including automotive refinishing, commercial aerospace and aviation, industrial manufacturing, woodworking, and defense. We understand the practical needs of the businesses that use our products and have the expertise required to help them reach their goals.

Our vertically-integrated manufacturing process means GFS controls every step from design and fabrication to installation and long-term service. Our reputation for high-quality, code-compliant solutions that perform in the most demanding environments differentiates us from competitors.

We also have an extensive distribution network, with reach throughout North America. Many of our products are kept in stock and available for immediate shipping.

Most importantly, safety and code compliance are our top priorities. GFS engineers regularly contribute to codes and standards across multiple industries, and all our products are designed to meet the stringent standards of organizations such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Yes. GFS offers additional services to meet your needs.

Our extensive product training program provides personalized guidance on how to maintain your filters based on which ones you select, your shop’s production volume and the coating type.

If you take advantage of our maintenance program, we can change your booth’s filters for you during quarterly or annual visits.

Ultimately, GFS views our customers as partners. We’ll provide expert insight into what you need, help you find the right filter and ensure that it still meets your needs long after your booth is up and running.

Global Finishing Solutions makes a perfect partner even if we didn’t manufacture your paint booth. We can help protect your technicians, coatings and surrounding environment by matching filters to your specific booth. We offer an extensive selection of OEM filtration systems and can service paint booth filters even if we didn’t manufacture them. In fact, we have experience with more than 20 different booth brands.

OEM parts won’t violate your warranty, and many systems are designed around them, including ours. Just as you wouldn’t buy the cheapest motor oil for a high-performance luxury car, you shouldn’t throw the least expensive filter you can find into a high-end paint booth. Your booth is an investment in your business, and you want it operating at peak performance.

Global Finishing Solutions is proud to offer a personalized experience to every prospective customer. Get started by requesting an automotive refinish quote or an industrial products quote today, and we’ll connect you with a knowledgeable local distributor who can help you explore different spray booth filters and guide you through the ordering and installation process
