Paint Booth Airflow Styles

Downdraft truck paint booths are generally considered to offer the best airflow style since they excel at eliminating overspray and other contaminants. Air enters the booth through a full-length, filtered ceiling plenum and flows vertically over the product until it’s exhausted through a filtered exhaust pit in the floor.

Side downdraft truck paint booths provide an economical alternative for facilities that cannot install an exhaust pit. Air enters through a full-length, filtered ceiling plenum and flows downward over the product. Floor-level filtered exhaust plenums are located on both sides of the booth to expel the air.

Crossdraft truck paint booths are the most economical option. Air flows horizontally over the product, entering at the front of the booth and exiting through an exhaust plenum in the rear. Pressurized booths have a dedicated intake chamber, while non-pressurized booths have filtered doors.

Code Compliance

GFS products are designed and manufactured to meet the applicable requirements of various industry-recognized codes and standards.

  • Reference NFPA 33 and Chapter 24 of the International Fire Code (IFC) for spray applications using flammable and combustible materials.
  • Reference NFPA 86 and Chapter 30 of the IFC for curing and drying applications.
  • Many components and product lines are ETL and ETL-C listed. The ETL or ETL-C mark is proof of compliance with North. American safety standards, including UL, NFPA, OSHA and more.
  • A UL or CUL listing verifies that Underwriters Laboratories has tested GFS’ product and determined that it meets their stringent safety and performance requirements.

Please be aware that local requirements may vary from national codes. GFS recommends consulting with your local authority before purchasing paint booths or other finishing equipment.

GFS engineers regularly contribute to the advancement of codes and standards that affect the industries that we work in. Several of our engineers serve on various NFPA Technical Committees responsible for key finishing industry standards.
